Why does my skin change in the Fall?

Why does my skin change in the Fall?

5 min

Breakouts, dull complexion, more visible dark spots, uneven skin texture… Back from summer, does your skin no longer feel quite the same as it did at the start of the season? Our skin doesn't face the same conditions in January, April, July or October. Cold, heat, changes in humidity, sun exposure… its environment evolves throughout the year, and its needs evolve with it. Observing these changes and adapting your routine at the right time helps you better support your skin through the seasons. In the fall, this transition is unique: the skin still bears the marks of summer while already having to adapt to the first drops in temperature.

So what's really going on, and how can you support your skin?

How does the change of season affect the skin?

Temperature, humidity, sun exposure, pollution, lifestyle: the skin's environment is constantly changing. In the fall, two phenomena meet: the skin still bears the marks of summer while it must already adapt to the first shifts in climate.

This transitional period can show up in different ways: loss of radiance, less even texture, dehydration, discomfort or the appearance of blemishes.
This principle lies at the heart of the CODAGE Seasonal Serums approach: changes in temperature and humidity, oxidative stress and certain skin imbalances create periods of temporary vulnerability.

What are the most common skin concerns after summer?

Why do I get breakouts and blemishes after summer?

Do you sometimes feel that your skin was clearer during your vacation, only for breakouts and blemishes to suddenly return once you're back to your usual routine?
Some skin types can indeed show more imperfections after the summer. A buildup of cells on the surface, sweat, sebum, as well as changes in lifestyle and routine can all contribute to a less even skin texture.

Your first instinct might be to cleanse and exfoliate more often to quickly get clear skin back. It's best to avoid overworking the skin. Controlled exfoliation and a consistent routine are better than a series of overly aggressive steps.

Why is my complexion dull in the Fall?

Your tan gradually fades and your complexion can lose the glow associated with sunny days.
On top of this, dead cells may build up on the surface of the epidermis. The skin texture then appears less even, less smooth, and light reflects off it less uniformly. Gradual exfoliation can help visibly refine skin texture and revive radiance, without trying to excessively speed up cell renewal.

Why are dark spots more visible after summer?

After several weeks of sun exposure, some pigmentation irregularities can also become more noticeable. Fall is therefore a particularly good time to reintroduce treatments that target an even, radiant complexion into your routine, while keeping up appropriate sun protection during the day.

Why does my skin get drier in the fall?

And while the skin recovers from summer, it already has to face the first changes in temperature. Cooler air outdoors, heating indoors, fluctuating humidity… Some skin types start to show more dryness or discomfort.
It's a sign that it may be time to gradually adjust your routine, especially by boosting hydration and protection.

What skincare routine should I follow in the Fall?

5 good habits

  1. Observe your skin before changing your routine
The date the season changes shouldn't be the only thing dictating your routine.
Does your skin feel tighter? Does your complexion look duller? Are blemishes appearing? Does its texture feel different? These are the signals that should guide how your skincare evolves. At CODAGE, we favor an approach based on observing the skin's needs rather than following a fixed routine.

  2. Keep protecting your skin from the sun
Summer is over, but UV exposure isn't. Sun protection remains an important step in the fall, even more so when your routine includes exfoliating actives such as AHAs. The goal isn't to pack away your SPF with your beach gear, but to make it part of your daily routine whenever exposure calls for it.

  3. Exfoliate in moderation
When your complexion looks dull and your skin texture less even, exfoliation can be especially beneficial. But more isn't necessarily better. Opt for gradual, controlled exfoliation, without combining scrubs, peels and exfoliating actives all at once.
The goal: to help clear the skin's surface of the dead cells that clog it and encourage smoother, more radiant skin that's more receptive to treatments.

  4. Gradually boost hydration
There's no need to wait for the first freezing days to adapt your skincare. When the first signs of discomfort appear, you can gradually enhance your routine with moisturizing and protective products suited to your needs. The right fall routine isn't necessarily the winter routine: it's a transition between the two.

  5. Don't try to fix everything at once
Blemishes, dark spots, lack of radiance, dehydration… It's tempting to add a product for every concern. Yet piling on actives and steps can make a routine needlessly complicated. It's better to focus on a few complementary steps and formulas that can address several skin needs at the same time.
A philosophy particularly close to CODAGE's heart.

FALL IN LOVE: correct Summer, prepare for Winter

It's precisely to support this unique period that CODAGE created Fall in Love, its fall Seasonal Serum. An intensive treatment designed to address the main concerns that can arise after summer and as fall begins: blemishes, dark spots, lack of radiance, uneven skin texture, dehydration and the need for repair.

28 actives. 9 Nutri-Elements. A formula that simultaneously tackles the aftereffects of summer and the first challenges of fall.

At the heart of its formula: an infusion of encapsulated AHAs. Unlike a one-time intensive exfoliation, encapsulation allows the AHAs to be released gradually. They help decongest the stratum corneum and improve the appearance of skin texture and radiance. But Fall in Love isn't just an exfoliating serum.

True to the CODAGE multi-active approach, its formula combines eight other Nutri-Elements with complementary properties: moisturizing, repairing, detoxifying, antioxidant, anti-blemish and anti-dark spot. The aim is to provide a comprehensive response to the skin at a time when its needs are changing.

A 15-day intensive treatment

Fall in Love is added to your routine for a limited period of 15 days, morning and evening, to support the transition from summer to fall.
In the morning, apply it with suitable sun protection, which is particularly important when using exfoliating products containing AHAs.
A seasonal treatment isn't meant to replace your daily routine. It complements it during a specific period, after which your usual skincare fully takes over again.
That's the difference between adapting your routine temporarily and overhauling it with every change of season.

What comes after Fall in Love?

Fall obviously doesn't end on the fifteenth day of the treatment. Once this transitional phase has been supported, the key is to keep observing your skin and adapting each step of your routine to its needs. At CODAGE, this routine is built around three essential steps:

PREPARE the skin with cleanser and toner.
ACT with targeted serums based on your needs.
PROTECT with suitable moisturizing and protective care.

The seasonal treatment simply enriches this routine when the skin is going through a period of changing needs.

One skin, four seasons

It's this observation of the skin's evolving needs that gave rise to the four CODAGE Seasonal Serums. Oh My Cold supports the skin in winter, Spring Break in spring, Summer Time in summer and Fall in Love in the fall. Four seasons, four moments of transition, one philosophy: Observe the skin. Understand its needs. Give it the right response at the right time.
